Protection please! – Everything you need to know about blue light filters & the right lens thickness

Did you know that we spend up to eight hours a day in front of a screen? – Whether watching series on the laptop or following friends and influencers on numerous social media platforms. You’ve probably also noticed that after this long time, our eyes get tired and some people even go to bed with a headache at night. But where does that actually come from? We will answer these and many other questions in this guide and give you a few tips on what you can do about it!

WHAT IS BLUE LIGHT AND HOW DOES IT AFFECT ME?

As already revealed in the title, we are talking about blue light. Our eyes are exposed to daily radiation from laptops, smartphones and tablets. The so-called high-energy blue light irritates our eyes and makes them tired with increasing use. As a result, many people feel tired and can hardly concentrate. In the long run, this light even damages our eyes.

But blue light not only affects our productivity – it can also disrupt our sleep rhythm, because the light prevents the production of the sleep hormone and the release of melatonin. Thus, our body does not receive signals that it is time to go to bed and falling asleep becomes more difficult.

BUT WHY IS THIS LIGHT DANGEROUS AT ALL?

Blue light consists of invisible light waves, just like UV light or infrared rays. The problem with light waves: The shorter the wavelength, the more harmful they are to our eyes. Blue light has a shorter wavelength than “visible light”, through which we can see the world in the colors we are used to, and can trigger eye diseases, concentration and sleep disorders or headaches. Most of it is emitted by our screens such as computers, smartphones or televisions.

THE SOLUTION

The “extra thin” (index 1.67) and “ultra thin” lenses (index 1.74) enhance your glasses in terms of density as well as with a lotus effect and an anti-static coating that protects your lenses from dust. Unfortunately, the processing of a blue light filter is technically not possible with the ultra thin glass.

Well, we’re going to show you! With a few little tricks, your home office time can almost be as exciting as time spent in the office. Except for your dear colleagues, whom you surely miss as much as we do.

1. Get out of those sweatpants!

We know how tempting it can be to slip straight from pajamas into comfy sweatpants, especially when no one behind the camera can see your cozy bottoms. But we promise you, even if no one but you is home, you’ll start the day off feeling a lot better if you’ve taken a few minutes to pick out a nice outfit. Not only will this be good for your well-being, but it will also get you back into the right work routine. Then, when you swap your work clothes for something casual in the evening, you can officially end your work day and feel more relaxed.

2. Goodbye distractions

The laundry pile is calling, the dishwasher is beeping and you’d like to vacuum right away when you see a few crumbs on the ground. We have all been there! When you’re at home, it’s easy to get distracted by your household and other small everyday tasks. But wait – working from home means you have to hold yourself accountable and stay productive. Also, don’t underestimate a comfortable chair and good light – your eyes and back will thank you later!

We all know that our earth urgently needs help and that we are facing massive environmental problems. We as a company also have a great responsibility in this respect and must therefore choose the right actions. It is not our intention to say we are perfect, but we are constantly working to make the greatest possible progress in economic, ecological and social terms. That is why we want to take you on a journey today: from the production of our products to the delivery to your home, we want to make the steps transparent and show you how we try to make a positive contribution.

Where Everything Began – The Idea

As early as the product design stage, we attach great importance to sustainability. We believe well thought-out designs and high-quality materials should not only offer you a high degree of functionality, but also be so resilient that our products will accompany you on your adventures for a long time.

The Choice of Materials – How do we use our resources?

Let’s get to probably the most important and most interesting point for you: our materials. Since the quality of our products and our environment, with its limited resources, play a major role for us, we select our raw materials according to strict criteria.

On the one hand, our backpacks are made of polyurethane (PU), which you might also know as “Vegan Tech Material”. In contrast to the plastic polyvinyl chloride, PU does not contain chemical softeners, is durable and even water-repellent.

We have also switched to recycled polyester (rPET), as this means no new resources and about 59% less energy is needed in production – and all this for the same quality. We can obtain this raw material from cleaned PET bottles or even your old clothes. Only two of our backpack models, the Lund “Olive Green” and “All Black,” contain a small amount of tarpaulin and canvas, for which we are currently looking for sustainable alternatives.

For the majority of our sunglasses, prescription and computer glasses we use acetate – the bioplastic made of cellulose which has a lot to offer. Not only does it belong to the renewable and recyclable raw materials, but it is also very light and flexible to adapt to your needs. In comparison, the metal in our glasses does not cut so well, which we are of course completely aware of. However, we unfortunately had to realize that we have not yet found a comparable material with the light, robust and heat-resistant properties of metal that is even remotely as durable. So there is definitely room for improvement here.

So, you see all in all, our products are not only durable, but also our materials are of the highest quality!

The First Stop – Our Production Site

The majority of our products are manufactured in Shenzhen near Hong Kong. Now some of you might think: “Hm, China? Is that so sustainable,” because of the negatively connotated reputation of which “Made in China” unfortunately precedes the products. But we can answer “YES” with a clear conscience. Shenzhen is one of the most progressive and innovative cities when it comes to sustainability. Many young and creative people work there to produce high-quality products while adhering to ethical and moral standards. And we have even set up our own glazing facility for our prescription glasses in our adopted city of Cologne. Here we can quickly and regionally adjust your prescription glasses for you at any time.

But Wait – What are the working conditions in production?

Of course, in production it is important to ensure that everything on site is in order. That’s why employees from our product design and purchasing teams travel to Shenzhen on a regular basis to ensure that everything is running smoothly. In addition, external organizations carry out so-called ethical audits for us. These are production visits during which the areas of hygiene, safety, health, waste management, child labor, salaries, working atmosphere and working hours are reviewed and checked whether all standards are adhered to. This way we can promise you a safe production despite the distance of our production site.

We are also improving our recycling and disposal processes of leftover material so that we can help to produce less waste.

From China to Your Home – The Transport

Our production site in Asia naturally entails long transport distances, which is a major environmental burden. In 2019 we have managed to carry 90% of the transport by train. However, due to the unpredictable demand for some products, we unfortunately had to transport parts by plane, and this is where we see our potential for improvement in the future, as transport by train emits 40% less CO2. As far as packaging is concerned, we work according to the motto ‘Refuse and Reduce’. To reduce unnecessary packaging, we have gotten rid of using plastic bags and switched to a reusable cotton bag. In the future we plan to protect our glasses with a glasses cleaning cloth instead of plastic.

The last step in our transport chain is the delivery to your home. Here we rely on collective storage and transport service providers to make the delivery as efficient as possible. The majority of our shipments are climate-neutrally shipped by DHL GoGreen, which compensates the CO2 emission of the shipment by donations to a climate organization. In addition, you may have asked yourself why returns have to be registered with us first and why you should cover the return costs. At first glance, this sounds like a complicated and costly process. However, we would like to raise the awareness of delivery routes and thus minimize the return routes. In addition, we save a lot of paper by not including the return label in every single package, because it produces unnecessary waste if not used. In the long term, we are striving to find a solution by opening our own stores to further minimize and simplify returns and delivery routes.

How to pimp your Instagram Story – design creative stories by using the text tool

Ahoi Kaptens, we have created something for all you Instagram admirers. Along with our presets that we launched last winter, we now designed some colorful summer stickers that you can download for free. Those make every story stand out – whether you are a beginner or already advanced in the Instagram game. You can find the link to download the stickers at the end of this blog post. And for those of you, who want to learn more interesting tips and tricks on how to pimp your Instagram story, we have summarized the ultimate design ideas in this Instagram-Story-Guide.

Let’s start simple: Most of you should already be familiar with the text tool. It hides behind the “Aa” symbol and not only lets you choose between different fonts and colors, but also the position of the text and its background. If this info doesn’t rock your boat then the following tips will allow you to reach your creative potential.

3D-Text and Shading   

With this easy tip you can create a shadow for your writing, giving your text a 3D effect. How to do this: Copy your text and then paste it in the same font. To get the 3D effect, just change the color of the copied text and position it a little bit behind the original text – very simple but at the same time very effective. Our tip: Try this effect using the “modern” font on Instagram as we think it works the best in that writing.

The Bead Chain Text

Childhood memory alert: Do you remember the stylish bracelets and necklaces with single letters on the square beads? They are currently experiencing a comeback as jewelry and even in your Instagram story they can be used as a great design. You can create this by using the “classic” font on Instagram and typing each letter by itself, adding a white background to it. Position the letter squares next to each other – for the classic retro look you should keep the letters in black. For those of you who like it colorful, you can also change the background color making it fit to your story tone.

Box and Bars

As mentioned before, Instagram lets you change the background of your text. You can use this feature to create boxes and bars by simply pressing the space key on your keyboard multiple times until the box has the desired size. Make sure you are using the font that has the background option, those are only “typewriter” and “strong”.The font “classic” only works when you type an extra dot. With this you can create various designs since you can also make the background on this font transparent.

Fairy Lights and Lines

Another creative application the text tool can be used for is the arrangement of lines and fairy lights for your Instagram story. To create the fairy lights, choose the font “neon” and add a row of dots. For the lines we recommend to use fonts like “classic”, “typewriter” or “strong” and then add a row of underlines “_”.
